If these zombies are so superhumanly strong that they can rip off your whole face with suspiciously little effort and practically tear your whole arm to shreds with a simple pat on the shoulder (that shit's hard, I've tried), why can't they claw their way through a shitty wooden wall? I don't care if you're dead, you can't just grab a chunk of a person OFF of them like they're a Costco birthday cake and eat it (go ahead, try it)! Do they have knife hands? Also, why does NO ONE refer to them as zombies? All that aside, great show. I was lucky enough to come into contact with a copy of the pilotepisode of 'The Walking Dead' and it is utterly amazing.I tend to stray away from this genre of movies as nothing I havewatched in the last 10 years has affected me in any way. The horrorgenre has gotten dull and boring.
This show breaks all of thoseboundaries. I literally sat there in awe through the entire episode.' The Walking Dead' is shot perfectly thanks to the director of 'TheShawshank Redemption' and it shows. AMC has another hit on their handswith this one. The dialouge is on point.I give it a 10 out of 10 because the 1 hour I watched of this showimpressed me more than any other zombie movies put together. I watched the entire season, all the time hoping the next episode wasgoing to be better than the one before.
Maybe I was expecting too muchwhen I heard The Shawshank Redemption/Green Mile director FrankDarabont was heavily involved. There wasn't anything that unique about the show, with the storylinecloser to a 'what would you do if zombies took over the planet?' Pubconversation with friends. It seemed to take elements from differentfilms completely; I noticed two major Danny Boyle/Alex Garland momentsfrom 28 Days Later and Sunshine respectively: POSSIBLE SPOILERS: BothThe Walking Dead and 28 Days have the main characters experiencing apost-apocalyptic world for the first time after waking from a coma in ahospital. I checked the dates and 28 Days Later came before The WalkingDead graphic novel which was in 2003.
The second thing I noticed wasmusic track by John Murphy from Sunshine being used. To add insult toinjury, it wasn't really used well. The visual effects seemed to switch from very impressive to very cheap.I don't get it.
It should have been consistently brilliant, instead itsometimes looked like an ambitious series shot on a tiny budgetpunching above its weight. There were a couple of stand out moments, which I can only reallyrecall from the pilot. Overall there are definitely not enough creepyor scary moments like there should have been for a series like this. Most of the acting annoyed me way too much; the Korean character, thewife, the kids just didn't cut it. Anthony Lincoln was decent enough asa main character, but nothing to write home about. You've seen thattype a thousand times before; just a run-of-the-mill lead without muchpersonality. Jon Bernthal stood out for me, but there was so much crapdialogue I don't really know where to start.I suppose something like this was going to hit TV sooner or later andit could have been a lot worse. Personally I reckon we've seen it allbefore- 28 Days Later, I Am Legend, any George A.
Romero film.Zombies/apocalypses, etc. Have been flogged to death (get it?!), andit's gonna take more than this to be special for me. Lets get this out of the way straight away THIS WILL BLOW PEOPLES SOCKSOFF. Im not kidding. I know people here are attracted to this genre forvarious different reasons but i'd like to think we all share someconnection when zombies are involved. For me its the post apocalypticscenario.
I don't particularly need the gore element but it has itsplace when used well.In Darabonts take on the apocalypse, you are there. The world is deadand rotting. The military have lost the battle. You wake up with Rickin this new world and get to explore it with him. Its the exposition ofthe pilot that will probably put the gorehounds off and lead to somesmall criticism from others. Personally, i want to see that.
I want toknow how society responded to the phenomenon. Those who have read the comic books here know that Kirkmans trick is toget you attached to the characters, like you know them intimately, thenkill them off. Here Darabont uses the same trick but not how you wouldexpect nor with who you would expect. Im personally invested in this series already.
God knows what it willdo to the average TV viewer. Im also not a particularly emotionalperson but i don't mind admitting that i was close to tears on a coupleof occasions. There you go.
I've said it. Just don't tell anyone. I cant say enough about Frank darabont after watching this. Heunderstands what this genre is all about and, more importantly, heunderstands Romero's zombie world.
The zombies are Roamers and lurkers. They act how they should and you do feel sorry for them. This isexplored really well. They are a small threat but in groups all riledup and hungry. Well, you know the rest. The score is also outstanding.
Very understated but poignant. Thecinematography is worthy of a movie and the camera moves a lot. I cantrecall any shaky cam which some people here seem to despise. Kirkman, Darabont and AMC have come up with the series we have beenwaiting years for. Long may it continue, and you know what? I think itwill. The balance is perfect between a horror film, TV show andintelligent drama.Oh and btw.
Keep getting people onboard with this. Nonzombie lover friends.
They wont think you're weird. They'llthank you. The Lost crowd are going to lap this up.
Aside from the stupid sexist conversation between the two male leads inthe beginning (made me wish they were freaking eaten right there andthen), i thought this was a gripping pilot that can lead to veryinteresting situations. The acting was good and the effects were greatwith a surprising high level of gore.
I was a little disappointed withthe development of the story, but i'll give it a chance, it seems to bepromising.I have always loved horror films but only recently did i givezombies a chance, since they were never my cup of tea. A good zombiemovie is hard to find, but they may have struck gold with this one, just make the characters a little bit more likable, otherwise what'sthe point if you don't root for them.
EDIT 1ST REVIEW - About the plot! Yes the 1st episode was great but it lacked a lot ofdetails.
They will probably tell us on the next few episodes, but if i free kin wake up from a coma and see dozens of dead peoplelaying around and a half mutilated zombies crawling over the floor, myfirst question to any human being 'not zombie' i meet is 'What the f#$&happened?' , 'Why is everyone dead?' , 'Why are they zombies?' Overallthe universal question 'What happened?' Thats a big FAIL on thepresentation of this show. Future of the show? Well, lets face it!
They don't have many placesto grab in the plot to make a great story. What will they do? Barricadethemselves in a building and shot the brains out of all the zombies inthe world? Well they became zombie probably because of a mutated virusor similar like 'I am legend' movie or even 'Resident evil'. Yes, theywill eventually discover a cure for the illness, but that will probablyhappen in the end of the show.
Probably some guy loved onewill be bitten and convert into a zombie, well. Lets face it.itwill surely happen! Military will show up and lock humans for research? There aren't a lot of things that can happen. Zombies are slow, havealmost no strength and a easy kill, harder to kill if they are ingroups but still doable, unless the virus mutated and appear a superzombie that can go trough wall and runs like a cheetah, if that happensthey are going out from the old-school zombie series into a 'Residentevil' look alike world.
Well at least the show 'probably' wouldn't beshot down.If you were looking for a mass killing, brain blowing, blood squirting, body parts flying horror-action-drama show, you found it. Well not yetsince the only thing that happened in the 1st episode was head shotsand a single use of a baseball bat. The mass killing, blood squirtingand body parts flying will surely come in the future episodes!
At leasti hope it does, or the show will suck!I don't expect a great history in the future episodes. This show is certainly using the world in a way that any serious postapocalyptic world is supposed to be used for-to examine characters andtheir reactions to the world, not just show their struggle to surviveand the destruction they cause.
This shows does this very well. The first episode provided some great 'Wow' moments and some verytouching moments. Like 'Breaking Bad', there were plenty of high octanemoments and plenty of emotional moments that kept the stress and strainup very high.Perhaps the biggest problem with the show so far, however, is the leadcharacter's naivete and inconsistency from the walkers. Shouldn't thehammering of the nails into the door frame by Morgan attract thezombie's attention since sound, we are told, attracts their attention? Was the half zombie which the lead character mercifully kills starvingto death? If she can starve to death, can she eat and digest when herbottom half is missing? If she wasn't starving to death, why was she soenergy-less at the end? If she was starving to death, wouldn't most ofthe zombies be starving to death by now? And finally, the naivete ofthe lead character frustrated me more than once during the firstepisode.
His walking up to a farm house asking for gasoline, expectinganyone to be alive or to still have gasoline. His entering the policestation (and leaving me surprised that anything is left there) andgetting a heavy arsenal of weaponry. But, as I mentioned, the show isn't there to show zombies. It's thereto show how characters react to this situation. So, don't probe intothe mechanics of the walkers, enjoy the characters and situation, andhave great fun watching this show which promises to be up to par withAMC's canon.
The Walking Dead is a great show in the Oughtie's. Who could forgetRick Grimes and his Cousin Shane. This show had lots of laighs, plentyof twists and turns, but I have just one question. Why Family Matters?Grimes and Shane worked in Law enforcement, that also employed anelevator operator named 'Lulu Winslow'. This character's comic reliefproves to be so popular, that she needs to be given a spin-off.Family Matters, which finally ended it's run in 1998. In case you don'tknow, Family Matters was the show that featured the world famous nerd, known as Steven Quincy Urkel. Family Matters was a decent, yet sillyshow, and being silly, only makes The Walking Dead look stupid.
Now,when I watch re-runs of Family Matters on TBS Superstation, I alwayswonder why was this show so damn successful. And why did it have tolaunch from Perfect Strangers.
Still, both great shows (one much betterthan the other) that had very successful series runs. If you canoverlook Family Matters, I would highly recommend The Walking Dead forit was a show with a great cast, funny jokes and lots of great episodeplots that only pansies who're afraid to watch real Romero movies couldenjoy!!!!! Don't watch the movie because you like horror, or you're intozombies.watch the movie because you want to see non-existentcharacter development, ridiculous plot lines, and B grade 'horror'. Thefocus of the movie isn't even zombies, but you have been warned. Badspecial effects (think 'worse then sfi fi channel CGI'), bad acting, bad story. Cute premise, but they massively fail to deliver on it. Iwas hoping for some camp and some style, just a sprinkling, mixed inwith the bikini babes.
Nope.Horndogs and gorehounds need not apply. Despite the film's title, thisis rather tame (and boring) entry into the 'NonHorror' genre. Onceagain this could've been better. Cinematography, better editing, betterangles, could've helped.
It was amateurish. What a let down.
And lame chicks. WTF.Power Rangers might have better action than this mess. The CGI islaughable with digitalized blood splatter and bullets that upon impactlook like those 70's FX of spaceships blowing up. The zombie make-up ishorrible, and the finale battle is ruined by cheesy flashbacks and morebad kids show FX.
Man I wish I could go back in time and replace thischoice. Edit: dropped my score from 8 to 6.So the first season is done. What a disappointment it turned out to be.Dialog is boring. Characters are annoying and bland.
Few moralquestions are seriously raised, and even fewer are explored to anydegree or resolved in any interesting way.A zombie apocalypse offers a great canvas for social issues, psychologyand drama. What this offers instead is trite and unbelievableinteractions of what quickly turn out to be very shallow characters. None of the dramatic and romantic opportunities of a post-apocalypticworld seem to have been done right.
I've read many reviews here bashing28 Days Later, which wasn't a perfect movie by any stretch of theimagination, but did at least lay a weighty, slightly ironic despairover everything, allowing its characters some pathos. It's a zombie apocalypse - HELLO?!The restrained use of music which I loved about the pilot quickly gaveway to the usual bursts of bland musical stock which seems to berecycled between the sort of yawn inducing action flick this has turnedinto. The promise of the main character gave way to a pussy-whippedfool who gets walked over by pretty much everyone around him. And asfor the casting. What happened to the genius of the Breaking Badcasting crew? It's just not showing here, at all.Admittedly, I'm so disappointed that I realize I'm overstating how badit all is. It really isn't. TWD is certainly competently done in manyways, and still shows a lot of promise.
Now let's wait (10months.really?) to find out if it can deliver.-This is based on the pilot episode.Admittedly, I watched the (pre air) pilot with baited breath, afterhaving suffered the severe disappointments of what should have been theother TV highlights of the year for me (I'm looking at you BoardwalkEmpire and the Pacific).Casting is good to very good so far, and I've confidence thatadditional casting over the run of the series will get better, considering it has the casting team of Breaking Bad behind it. I lovedhow early mood scenes in the pilot were allowed time to sink in,without the typically expected 'dramatic' music to tell the viewer whatto feel. It has great sets and makeup and solid writing too, without itbeing on par with AMC's best offering so far (talking about BreakingBad, not Mad Men) - yet. Can't wait to see if this will pan out into the epic, addictive show itcan (and should) become, but the pilot puts up a proud flag, and I'mhopeful it will attain the same heights that the (mini) UK zombieseries Dead Set reached, and use its potential decade long run (as oneof the developers claimed to aim for) to arc its way into a newstandard for zombie 'flicks'. I might be wrong or even the only one who sees it this way but to me,all this zombification phenomenon is in fact a mirror of ourcontemporary society, devoid of art, culture, passion, emotion orwisdom.
As a zombie cares of nothing else but an immediate way tosatisfy its pathological hunger, the man has become a creature enslavedby his own putrid society, unaware of the fact that he's part of aperpetual mechanism which drains what's left of his dying humanity andmakes him desire no more than the primal needs of his animalcounterparts. There is plenty of thrilling action, fight for survival, and of course, the sweet sweet horror which can make your skin crawl!Cutting edge special effects make the scenes very realistic and fun towatch. One thing I've sensed from the negative reviews, is that most of thosepeople have probably never read the comics, are looking for gross outgorefests and have no idea what they are talking about. I found thisapocalyptic storyline much better than anything Romero could havecooked up.
Warranted the Night of The Living Dead series wasentertaining for it's time however it grew into typical schlock witheven the remakes a step down. I am a fan of gore but I also love scarysuspense, such as when he is in the darkened hospital stairwells andwalking into the dark sewers. Gore does not = good, I've seen plenty ofgorefested zombie movies that turn me off rather than on. I like astory not just scenes of people being ripped open and eaten. If youhaven't read the comics, you may want to read the first few to get anidea of the story.
It is way different than Night Of The Living Dead or28 days later etc. Some similarities maybe but overall very different.Do not listen to the negative reviews as i repeated before, most ofthose people are clueless and are expecting the typical gore schlock. If you like a good story and some decent acting then sit back and enjoy, those who have read the comics know what lies ahead. It will be coolto see how they adapt the future stories as there is a lot of ground tocover and the comic is still going.
All great zombie movies are too short. You're left wondering how thepeople live their lives once zombies become the norm. This series givesus the opportunity to see how people go on and survive after theinitial shock. There is some questionable logic in their choice ofliving quarters, weird decisions, and a few other issues, but once youchoose to set that aside, The Walking Dead is FANTASTIC entertainment. You can really become invested in the character's daily struggles withnot just surviving the zombies, but surviving the living as well. Eachplayer has their own internal struggle and has something unique tobring to the story.
Overall, this is one of the best shows on TV andwill eventually be considered one of the great classics. The best contemporary zombie thing ever! Enough Resident Evil's likemovies with big monsters, hybrid DNAs, lots of crazy acrobaticsmaneuvers, unlimited ammo, and no 'reality', no suspense, nocharacters, no classic zombies If you are into some zombie culturewith classic roots like George Romero's movies Night of The LivingDead, The Crazies, Dawn of The Dead or something new like 28 DaysLater, I Am Legend Then you are going to love it.Finally me fighting zombies day-by-day on my couch Since Lost I hadnothing but comedy series to watch; now finally I have some series totake my TV time for suspense and action.
I don't know why I'm even bothering writing about this complete pieceof nonsense. The first season was not very good, but I gave the second2 shots.they're out. The plot is incredibly stupid., as are thecharacters. No group of people this dumb could possibly last in theland of the dead.
They take off in vehicles which have little chance ofmaking it down the road very far and they don't. If they are going totry and use the freeway, they should use ATV vehicles which can go elsewhere also. Considering they are always just finding vehicles and alsosomehow finding gas, I'll bet Atlanta had better cars.they seem toabound.
Then instead of trying to hide in the middle of a freeway, theycould get out of the open. So, OK, they're dumb. They're caught. Theylose a little girl due to the stupidity of that comic opera sheriff, who insists on wearing that ridiculous hat, as though it confers somesense of order, when there is none.
When his son ask if 'Can I go tooDad?' Instead of telling him to stay home and guard the fort, he says'Sure,' like they are going on a rabbit hunt.
And gets shot. Then thedad gets all weepy and shows he has no more intestinal fortitude thanthe mom of the lost little girl, who's always moaning. His wife shouldbe sheriff. At least she's got balls. And just how is it that thislittle house on the Prairie has never been attacked by the Zombies?Narry even a broken window.
But good they still haveelectricity so they can chill the milk that comes from somewhere, sincethey don't have any cows. What would HatMan do without his glass ofmilk and cookies. The whole plot stinks. It is one of the worst showsI've ever seen on TV. And that's saying something.
I'm done.writing. And watching this complete waste of time. AMC has producedsome great shows including Mad Men, but this is dreck. I watched the entire season, all the time hoping the next episode wasgoing to be better than the one before. Maybe I was expecting too muchwhen I heard The Shawshank Redemption/Green Mile director FrankDarabont was heavily involved. There wasn't anything that unique about the show, with the storylinecloser to a 'what would you do if zombies took over the planet?' Romero film.Zombies/apocalypses, etc. Have been flogged to death (get it?!), andit's gonna take more than this to be special for me. Spoilers -Its not that magnificent that people praise TWD. People were praisingTransformers and Avatar as genius flicks with great dialog and hugecharacter development. So I wasn't surprised when I saw TWD had a 9/10rating on IMDb before I pressed play on the pilot.Really, it sucked. I loved the concept, I loved the core and I havebeen waiting for a zombie TV show for a long time.
But lets be real.Lets remove the love we have for the genre and just see TWD for what itis.Braindead action packed with melodrama. The post apocalyptic intro isthe same intro we have seen a lot of times. You know, protagonist wakesup at the hospital without knowing why there are tons of dead bodiesout there and no single human being is around (28 days later, ResidentEvil is what comes to mind when I see Rick waking up).And so it carry's on with plot holes, like when Rick rides into Atlantaand the shot of him riding the horse on a empty road into the citywhile the road that leads out of the city is packed with cars crashed.Yeah, because not even a zombie apocalypse could make Americans disobeythe traffic laws, nobody said 'hey guys. Maybe we can try the roadthat leads out of the town since its. You know, empty?' In town, he easily strolls around until he rides into a horde ofzombies. When they chase him, Rick is suddenly sealed off and has nowhere to go.
Thats good writing.I could spend an hour writing about the plot holes, but you probablyknow them by now. Lets talk about the characters. Is anyone developing? It seems Season 2 is all about character development since they havebeen doing nothing for 4 episodes except from talking about God,looking for Sophia and it seems Darryl is getting some developmentsince he went from racist redneck to botanical poet in a couple of daysof the show. Strange how the group talks about the zombies being attracted by soundand yet Darryl is the badass outsider who is allowed to ride around inthat very, very loud HD.Andrea has been learning how to handle a gun for quite some time now.Obviously the writers made the women of the show useless and almostretarded, since their obligation is to wash clothes and talk aboutemotions. Sophia tops the uselessness list by being lost for so long, and the way she got lost is another great touch of amazing writing(sarcasm). Conclusion:The show is not what you think it is. Remove the love goggles of youreyes, break the show down into separate parts where you look at thewriting, the action, the characters and the plot and you will see thatit's very badly written and for sure not a masterpiece.
Unless you likesoap operas, that is. If you enjoy the melodrama of the show, well thenyou aren't really looking for a post apocalyptic show, you just wantDays of our Lives set in an alternate location.
How to describe the characters and writing of this show. I think'stupid' or 'idiotic' might cover it.
The entire concept of the show, the idea itself is fantastic, unfortunately the writing staff havemonologue'd the show into oblivion.Without revealing too much, characters are repeatedly told not do to A,B or C, and then go ahead to do either A, B, or C with nastyconsequences. Characters show barely any worry at the impending doomthey may have, and don't seem to care until a zombie is actually intheir eyesight. They continue with their mundane 'before' lives untilin peril, then run around in circles flapping until one of the two'saviors' go and do something about it.Things that any ordinary everyday person would identify, andimmediately correct are overlooked for multiple episodes.Season 2 is contrived and under-budget, which can be seen with a 4 or 5episode stint in the same location, I have no idea where the millionsfor these episodes were spent, maybe they are keeping it for later!I have hope for the show, hope the writers gen up and kill a couple ofmajor characters off. Give us something to worry about, make us careabout more than one character. Please, save the show. While watching the pilot episode of The Walking Dead the only word thatwent through my mind was 'awesome!'
I only recently was talked into watching the first episode by myDaughter as I avoid the Undead, Ghost, Vampire genre. I was blown away!I could not stop watching and had to get EVERY episode! They made 6episodes year 1 and about 12 year 2, at 42 minutes an episode theentire year 1&2 run time is around 12 hours total and COULD RUN AS ONE12 HOUR MOVIE, and you would still not wanna leave for popcorn. The endof each episode left me dying for the next one, The writing isincredible, the character development amazing and don't suppose youknow who will live or die here cause you will have no idea. The qualitymakes it seem as if all other series are quaint and boring. I findmyself thinking about the next episode every day. VERY WATCHABLE; VERYENTERTAINING; GREAT GREAT SERIES!!
So after reading the review 'An honest perception' I felt like I neededto write my own review. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. However, that being said I have to disagree with the reviewer. So here are the reasons I like the show.First, character development, this is not usually a very big trait inthe Zombie genre. If you only watched 3 episodes, this is a big part ofwhat you watched. They take the time to give you a slight background ofthe characters, a chance for you to get to know them. For those of usthat are big fans of the Zombie genre it gave us a chance to think 'Whowould I be?' In this situation.Second, the story doesn't follow a straight line.
This was a point ofcontention in the other review. I personally like the multiple storylines. It keeps things interesting and keeps it from becoming a boringshow where I can foresee how everything is going to turn out. Andbefore anyone says itYES I know this is based off a graphic novel. Ihaven't read it and will refrain from reading it for a while.Third, the zombies look and act pretty bad ass. The make up is donegreat, not a bunch of CGI which is so common in today's world. Soanywayif you aren't a fan of the zombie genre to begin with then yeah, you probably aren't going to get why so many of us love the show. However, I think most fans of the genre will love this show.
So in closing, for those of us who love the genre, It's a weekly doseof zombie apocalypse. For those that aren't fans of the genre, when the zombie apocalypsehappens and you don't know what to dodon't come crying to me and myfriendsyou'll just slow us down.On second thoughtyou may come in handy in case we need to make a hastyretreat.
First heard about this show a few weeks back. Since I lovezombie-movies I had to see what this was all about. At first glimpse Iwas a little skeptic, but the trailer convinced me otherwise.I just watched the first episode and it matches all my expectations andMORE! I loved movies like Dawn of the Dead(new version), 28 days/weekslater, I Am Legend etc. This series is just like that, it'szombies/monsters but still very realistic. The way the plot is presented is very entertaining, but not verysurprising.
The acting is top-notch and very believable. A drawbackwith TV-series is that the effects are usually quite tacky. However, here it's quite the opposite. Everything looks very realistic andhonestly quite disgusting, in a good way.I can't wait to watch the next episode! Lets get this out of the way straight away THIS WILL BLOW PEOPLES SOCKSOFF. Im not kidding. I know people here are attracted to this genre forvarious different reasons but i'd like to think we all share someconnection when zombies are involved.
